Northern Flame became the 12 th first-crop winner for Flameaway, scoring an impressive victory in a
$120,000 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs on Friday, Sept. 15. Flameaway is currently the
second-ranked First-Crop sire with progeny earnings of $897,811.
With jockey Julien Leparoux aboard for trainer Ken McPeek, Northern Flame took command of the 1
1/16-mile test at the start. He set all the pace from the two-path, shook free of pressure around the far
turn, and held sway to the wire to score by 1 ½ lengths.
Owned by John Oxley, Harold Lerner LLC, and AWC Stables, Northern Flame was bred in Kentucky by
Debby Oxley. The bay colt was a $425,000 graduate of last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale where he
was acquired by Lerner out of the Gainesway consignment. Northern Flame is produced from the
unraced Bernardini mare Darling’s Darling and is a half-brother to graded stakes-placed On Alert. His
second dam is multiple stakes winner Darling My Darling, who is the dam of Grade 1 winner Heavenly
Love and Grade 2 stakes winner Forever Darling.
In addition to Northern Flame, Flameaway is represented by Dreamfyre, winner of the Sorrento S. (G3)
and the Everett Nevin S., and TDN Rising Star Julias Dream, a debut maiden special weight winner at Del
Mar. His first 2-year-olds have sold for up to $200,000, $185,000, $180,000, etc.
